Trashtown

Robert Tait

A country town explodes with bigotry and hate.

At thirty, Andrew feels he's experienced everything life on Oxford Street can offer. It's time for a break. He heads north to visit his mother and grandfather in a small isolated coastal town. But instead of simplicity and tranquility, he finds a community in upheaval. A spate of shocking vandalism has unsettled everyone; there's religious revivalism, Hansonite politics, and homosexuality of a more dangerous, closeted kind. In exposing the town's secrets, Andrew has to fight; not only for justice but also for his life. Trashtown is a family saga documenting the breakdown of Australian small town values; a story both funny and sad, shocking and familiar.

Robert Tait:
As a retailer and Board member of Darlinghurst Business Partnership, Robert Tait's current focus is the revitalisation of Oxford Street as Australia's number one gay precinct. He marches in Mardi Gras every year and has been a Helen Demidenko, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and a blood-splattered "friend" of Dick Cheney.
